What Is Crow Hill Company’s “Harmonic Piano”?
Harmonic Piano is a piano library that samples only the beautiful harmonics (overtones) produced by lightly touching the strings of a grand piano while striking the keys. It was recorded at Castlesound Studios using a special technique: the lids were removed from two grand pianos, and the players reached inside the instruments to lightly touch each string at roughly the quarter point while striking the corresponding key. Because this sound is nearly impossible to produce consistently in a real performance, the two grand pianos were meticulously sampled and arranged in an ultra-wide antiphonal stereo configuration, resulting in an instrument with extraordinary depth, space, and character. The result is an ethereal, highly expressive sound that is completely different from a conventional piano.
