Russian developer Stone Voices is giving away Retro Radio, a deeply detailed AM-radio simulator effect plugin that goes far beyond a generic lo-fi filter. Crackles, rattles, Morse-signal interference, amplitude-modulation distortion, parasitic modulation, and a selection of cabinet sizes are all bundled into one free download. This article walks through what the plugin can do and where to grab it.
Stone Voices Retro Radio (Free)
Retro Radio recreates the sound of an old AM-radio receiver in a single VST/AU effect. It can layer in the characteristic noise, crackle, rattle, and Morse-signal interference of AM reception, along with the amplitude- and frequency-response distortion and parasitic modulation that come with a poorly tuned analog circuit. The cabinet model lets you switch between large floor-standing radios and small portable sets, so you can dial in either a warm wooden midrange or a tinny pocket speaker. The interface is built around a vintage tube-radio look, with a level indicator inspired by the 6E5S “magic eye” cathode-ray tuning tube once used on Soviet receivers.
Free downloads of niche, character-driven effects like Retro Radio are perfect for adding texture to vocals, drums, or full mixes. If you want a quick way to make a clean recording feel like it is coming through a 1950s radio set, this one is well worth installing.
