Forma Labs Audio is giving away the public beta of Filament, a real-time MIDI orchestration plugin aimed at composers and arrangers. The initial beta round is currently full, but the waitlist for the next round is open.
What is Forma Labs Audio “Filament”?
Filament takes the chords and MIDI notes you play and automatically routes them across multiple instrument tracks so that the voicings mirror a real orchestral seating arrangement. Double bass, cello, viola, and violin each receive the appropriate notes from low to high, so even a simple keyboard performance comes out sounding like an actual string section is playing together. The chord re-voicer analyzes your selected ensemble and redistributes notes to fit it, which makes it useful as a learning tool for newer arrangers and a serious time-saver for experienced composers.
A single instance can host up to 64 instruments, and with the built-in clip launcher and arpeggiator you can build anything from the kind of driving ostinatos heard in Hans Zimmer-style scores to full, thick orchestral productions — rhythmic and harmonic elements generated from a single performance.
Filament is planned to launch at £149, but right now it’s available as a free public beta with capped enrollment. Beta testers get full-feature access at no cost and a direct feedback channel to the developer. At the time of writing, the first beta round is full, and the official site is taking waitlist signups for the next round.
