DRUGS is a bus compressor that adds density and squash to your drum bus using a single macro control called DOSE. As you turn DOSE up, the peak level barely moves — instead of getting louder, the signal gets denser. It is designed to rebuild breakbeats rather than simply level them, pulling up the room tone hiding underneath the hits. The developer describes the sound as a dense, “vinyl-simulator-style squash” — the kind of texture a break picks up after it has been through a sampler.
Key Features
- DOSE: a single macro control that moves the transfer curve, knee, attack and release together — behaving just like a macro knob on hardware
- No threshold or ratio controls. The gain law is lookup-table based, so the local ratio changes continuously depending on input level
- Release is adaptive with no user control. It reacts to the preceding transient, applying a short release to hits and a longer release to sustained material
- Auto make-up gain is applied after the gain cell, so setting levels never interferes with the dynamics
- MIX: a zero-latency dry/wet control. The dry signal is sample-aligned with the wet path, so parallel compression never causes comb filtering at any setting
- GAIN: adds 5 dB after the compressor and before LIMIT. Both GAIN and LIMIT are on at startup
- LIMIT: a zero-latency soft ceiling at -0.3 dBFS on the output stage. It includes a clip indicator, only attenuates, and stays transparent below roughly -0.9 dBFS
