2. What is Three-Body Technology “UNMASK”?
UNMASK is a dynamic EQ based on psychoacoustics. By continuously analyzing the input signal and applying real-time corrections, it clarifies details and improves tonal balance and transparency.
It operates across three perceptual dimensions—”Spectral (frequency),” “Tonal (spectral envelope),” and “Temporal (transients)”—each governed by a dedicated module (SPEC, TILT, TIME), all controlled with a single “Depth” knob. As you increase the “Depth” value, your sound becomes more open and expansive.
Basics: Mix Bus Video
Advanced Techniques 1: Guitar Video
Advanced Techniques 2: Vocal Video
Sidechain Features Video
SPEC: Spectral Unmasking
Lifting buried sounds and taming overpowering ones.
The SPEC module dynamically boosts masked “buried sounds” while suppressing “protruding peaks,” processing them continuously and dynamically. The result is a clearer, more defined, and detailed sound that brings out more expression than the input audio originally had.
It includes a Smooth parameter that adjusts the resolution of the processing. Higher settings deliver natural correction suitable for acoustic instruments, while lower settings handle finer masking issues such as those found in synthesizers.
TILT: Spectral Envelope Shaping
Shaping the spectrum your ears want to hear.
The TILT module analyzes the spectral envelope in real time and gently guides the overall tonal balance toward a specified slope (-3, -4.5, or -6 dB/oct). You can establish a balanced tonal foundation without battling broad EQ curves. Since natural recordings often have a natural slope of -9 to -6 dB/oct, around “-6 dB/oct” is suitable when you want to preserve a natural sound.
It also features a Detection Frequency Range function that limits the frequency band TILT analyzes, preventing the algorithm from being influenced by unwanted frequencies.
TIME: Temporal Unmasking
Revealing sounds hidden behind transients.
The TIME module detects and restores sounds hidden behind transients—such as the tail of a snare, the sustain following a guitar pick, or reverb tails—across the entire frequency spectrum, revealing depth and detail that EQ or compressors cannot reach.
It comes with a Speed parameter that adjusts the response speed of the processing, covering fast-moving material like drums (Fast) all the way to smooth processing for mastering and sustained sounds (Slow).
EXT Glue: Psychoacoustic Fusion
Naturally blending tracks together.
Unlike conventional sidechain processing (ducking or compression), EXT Glue analyzes the mutual masking relationship between the external sidechain signal and the track UNMASK is inserted on, resolving psychoacoustic conflicts.
For example, if you insert UNMASK on a vocal track and route the instrumental into EXT Glue’s input (as an external sidechain), increasing “Depth” not only places the vocal on top of the instrumental but also adjusts them to blend more naturally. Rather than losing the vocal’s character, this resolves masking inconsistencies that made them sound “separated,” giving you a more cohesive mix.
Key Features
- Easy to use: Improve your sound just by turning three “Depth” knobs (one for each of the SPEC, TILT, and TIME modules). Each module starts at a practical default, so for many sessions you only need to adjust these three knobs.
- Gain Range: Independently set the maximum amount UNMASK can boost or cut, preventing excessive processing or allowing more aggressive results. Configurable per module or globally.
- Processing Frequency Range: Limit the frequency band where UNMASK applies its processing. The analysis range is configured independently, so you can analyze the entire signal while processing only a specified range.
- Priority Curve: Adjust the strength of UNMASK’s processing per frequency band. For example, you can apply stronger processing in the mid-range that matters for vocal clarity, while applying weaker processing in the low end to preserve weight.
- Monitor Modes: Solo each module’s boost, cut, or their difference (delta) to hear exactly what UNMASK is doing.
- Master Controls: Apply settings such as Scale, Smooth, Attack, Release, Gain Range, Processing Frequency Range, and Priority Curve globally to all modules. You can also adjust each independently by switching between MASTER / SPEC / TILT / TIME view selectors.
- Zero Latency Mode: By default, linear-phase filters are used (ideal for mixing). For live performance or tracking where latency is a concern, you can switch to Zero Latency Mode, which uses minimum-phase filters with no delay.
- Flexible Routing: Supports channel modes including LR / MS / Mid Only / Side Only / M2S (Mid triggers Side) / S2M (Side triggers Mid). Also includes a Link control to adjust stereo processing independence, and a Dry Mix knob to blend the effected signal with the original.
- And more: Global delta scale / time adjustment / mix control, real-time spectrum analyzer, sidechain monitoring, external sidechain support, oversampling, undo/redo, A/B switching, user-defined defaults, customizable behavior settings, theme and skin support, CPU optimization, GPU-accelerated graphics, native Apple Silicon support, and Retina / high-DPI display support.
