2. What Is the Roland “TR-606”?

An Underground Staple Reborn — Software Rhythm Composer

The Roland “TR-606” is a software instrument that faithfully recreates the programmable drum machine “TR-606 Drumatix,” released in 1981, using Roland’s proprietary ACB (Analog Circuit Behavior) technology. While preserving the same sound and behavior as the original, it adds new features that virtually re-circuit the unit to expand its tonal range, along with functions for faster, more flowing programming. It supports VST/AU/AAX formats in your DAW.

Originally designed as the companion to the TB-303 Bass Line, its size, price, and ease of use dramatically lowered the barrier to high-quality music production and put it within everyone’s reach. Its punchy mid-range kick, snappy toms, and sizzling hi-hats were beloved by DIY musicians and have been used across a wide range of genres — from 1980s new wave and punk to Jamaican dancehall and every electronic style imaginable.

Hardware Integration

The TR-606 plugin integrates seamlessly with the TR-8S Rhythm Performer and the Roland Boutique TR-06. You can transfer patterns from the TR-8S to the plugin, or send beats made in your DAW back to the hardware to perform them live. Pre-mapped controls let you operate the plugin hands-on using the TR-06.
