2. What Is Softube?
Founded in 2003 in Linkoping, Sweden, Softube is an audio plugin and hardware maker. The starting point was Oscar Oberg, an engineering graduate student at Linkoping University who was measuring the tubes of a Marshall JCM800 and became convinced that analog gear could be recreated digitally far better than the lifeless emulations available at the time. He was soon joined by Niklas Odelholm, Arvid Rosen, and Torsten Gatu to found the company as a team of four, and more than 20 years later these founding members still lead it.
Philosophy – Rock & Roll Science: a development ethos that combines a passion for music with a scientific approach.
Technology – Component-level modeling: Softube takes hardware apart and rebuilds it as code at the highest possible resolution, meticulously reproducing the behavior of the circuit.
Ecosystem – 100+ products: the lineup spans software versions of classic gear all the way to hardware controllers that transform your workflow.
Softube partners officially with leading brands in their respective fields to faithfully recreate industry-standard gear, including:
- Marshall
- Tube-Tech
- Chandler Limited
- Solid State Logic (SSL)
- Weiss Engineering
- Drawmer
- Summit Audio
- Empirical Labs
- Trident Audio
- Valley People
- Abbey Road Studios
Product Lineup Overview
Softube’s products are officially organized into several broad categories, ranging from mixing and mastering plugins to synths, guitar & bass, hardware integration systems, and subscriptions.
Mixing: the core tools for mixing — EQs, compressors, saturation, channel strips, and more. Examples: American Class A / British Class A / SSL SL 4000 E & XL 9000 K / Summit Audio Grand Channel / various Chandler Limited / Tube-Tech / Tape.
Mastering: mastering-grade precision tools centered on the collaboration with Weiss Engineering. Examples: Weiss DS5 / Weiss DS1-MK3 / Weiss MM-1 Mastering Maximizer / Weiss EQ 1 / Weiss Compressor-Limiter.
Synthesizers: software instruments ranging from modular to polyphonic synths and drum machines. Examples: Modular / Model 72, 80, 82, 84 / Statement Lead / Parallels / Heartbeat (drums).
Guitar & Bass: the amp and cabinet simulations that are also Softube’s origin. Examples: Amp Room / Marshall Plexi, Bluesbreaker, Silver Jubilee, JMP 2203 / Eden WT800 Bass Amp.
Hardware System – Console 1 Mixing System (Mk III): an integrated hardware-plus-software system that redefines mixing inside the DAW. The Channel Mk III and Fader Mk III let you operate EQ, compression, drive, shape, and more intuitively, with one knob per function. It supports officially licensed channel strips from Weiss, Empirical Labs, Chandler Limited, Summit Audio, and SSL, and includes the Core Mixing Suite (Tape / FET Compressor Mk II / Bus Processor).
Subscription – Flow Subscription Suites: Flow Complete Suite is a subscription that includes the Flow Mixing Suite, the Flow Mastering Suite, and the Model Series synth collection, giving access to over 70 top-tier plugins — including Weiss, Chandler, and Tube-Tech — for $24.99 per month.
Featured Products
From across the lineup, here are some of the signature products that define Softube.
American Class A: a channel strip based on the legendary API consoles used in American mixing desks. It works both as an expansion for Console 1 and as a standalone plugin.
Weiss DS5 Multiband Compressor: a next-generation multiband compressor developed through close collaboration between Softube and Weiss Engineering. The Weiss DS1, regarded as the gold standard in mastering, is fully ported to code across all five bands, with DS1-MK3-equivalent processing on each band for extremely precise, transparent dynamics control per frequency range. It offers three switchable modes — Dynamic Phase, Static Phase, and Linear Phase — suited to mastering as well as the mix bus, vocals, drums, and more.
Tube-Tech Complete Collection 2: an officially licensed Tube-Tech collection delivering timeless analog tone shaping. It includes the following products and their legacy versions: SMC 2B Multiband Compressor (a 3-band optical compressor chosen by top engineers, producers, studios, and mastering houses worldwide); CL 1B Mk II (the legacy CL 1B with modern signal processing added, with a generation switch to toggle Mk I and Mk II sounds); Equalizer Mk II (the classic PE 1C and ME 1B combination plus legacy versions); and Classic Channel Mk II (combining both generations of the CL 1B optical compressor with tube-driven passive EQ, PE 1C and ME 1B).
Amp Room: the core of Softube’s guitar/bass amp simulations. Amp Room traces back to Softube’s very first native product and remains a central series for guitar and bass tone.
Chandler Limited Germanium Compressor: a compressor plugin that faithfully recreates a celebrated piece of hardware designed by listening to the music rather than the math.
Modular: a modular synthesizer plugin developed in collaboration with Doepfer. In addition to 50 stock modules, it component-models seven of Doepfer’s analog hardware modules and ships with over 400 high-quality presets covering a wide range of styles and sounds.
Heartbeat: an 8-channel drum machine built around modeled analog synthesis. As Softube effects it includes TSAR-1 Reverb and Valley People Dyna-mite, plus Filter Echo and Output Saturation.
Chandler Limited Zener Limiter: a descendant of the Abbey Road Studios compressors, inheriting the vintage hardware used on recordings by Pink Floyd and The Beatles. It offers three modes: Comp 1 and Limit were originally designed to emulate the Abbey Road compressors, while Comp 2 provides a more modern response.
