2. Pulsar Audio Product Overview
Here, we will introduce an overview of Pulsar Audio products.
Mu
Mu is a plugin that faithfully emulates a legendary vacuum tube compressor/limiter, combining modern functionality with the characteristics of iconic Manley hardware.
Pulsar Mu is a stereo compressor designed for mixing and mastering purposes, capable of operating in Left/Right or Mid/Side modes. It provides flexibility for tracking as well. It can be used for leveling, limiting, and adding the analog warmth of the emulated tube signal path.
While accurately reproducing the original unit’s SIFAM meters, Pulsar Mu also features a more modern visualization mode for fine-tuning compression settings, displaying both waveform and gain reduction over time and in an instant.
Additionally, it offers various options for sidechain signal processing. While the popular modification of the original device added a high-pass filter, Mu goes further by providing a complete equalization section, allowing precise adjustment of the compressor’s response to low, mid, and high frequencies using just four knobs.
1178
Pulsar 1178 is a plugin effect that models the iconic FET compressor from Pulsar Audio.
FET compressors are synonymous with the Universal Recording Electronics Industries (Urei) 1176. Introduced by Urei, founded by Milton Tasker “Bill” Putnam during the era dominated by tube compressors.
The 1178, released in 1980, is the stereo version of the legendary 1176 found in studios worldwide. Based on the 1176 Rev. H (the original 1176 had various revisions from Rev. A to H), it retains the legendary punch while offering a more transparent and versatile sound without the warmth.
The Pulsar 1178 plugin meticulously recreates the sonic characteristics and compression behavior of the 1178 hardware. It includes a full sidechain EQ to enhance control, an optional saturation stage to add warmth and character, and accurate metering for precise monitoring.
Smasher
The original 1176 compressor hardware offers four selectable ratios, but studio engineers quickly discovered that pushing all of them simultaneously resulted in a distorted, explosive, and highly compressed sound. Smasher was meticulously designed to recreate this “All buttons in” or “British” mode.
Smasher excels at delivering a raw, gritty sound reminiscent of bands like Vulfpeck, The Whitefield Brothers, and The Black Keys.
W495
The Neumann W495 EQ was used in the mastering of many records manufactured from the 1970s to the 1990s. However, even after this golden era, many mastering engineers continue to favor this EQ. The W495 features a wide range of equalizing curves, allowing for musical yet incredibly powerful pushing. It not only easily provides tone shaping and character to individual tracks but also finishes a mix with presence and a sound of depth.
To further evolve Pulsar Audio’s W495, we have added features expected in modern plugins. These include an on-screen curve editor, auto gain, mid/side selection for each band, and a comprehensive digital meter among others. From channel EQ to mastering EQ, the Pulsar W495 is a user-friendly, powerful tone shaper that faithfully reproduces the iconic three-band EQ.
8200
Pulsar 8200 faithfully emulates the legendary GML 8200, which was designed by George Massenburg, the inventor of parametric EQ.
Just like the original, it provides tight and solid low-end, crystalline highs, and precise control over the frequency spectrum.
Pulsar 8200 comes with a comprehensive screen curve editor and spectrum analyzer. This combination of the best approaches from both worlds allows you to highlight the unique behavior of the original unit while accurately grasping the overview of EQ changes. The user-friendly graphical interface enables a faster workflow.
Massive
Pulsar Massive is an emulation of the Manley Massive Passive EQ found in mastering studios worldwide. It is designed by synthesizing the best passive equalizers from the past 70 years, and its unique sound is a result of several distinct characteristics in its design.
Firstly, the EQ with a fully parallel topology provides a different type of response compared to digital equalizers with the same settings. The tonal corrections of a parallel equalizer are not cumulative but tend to interact with each other, allowing for a more intuitive and fluid shaping of the frequency spectrum.
Additionally, the original hardware’s equalizer circuitry is entirely passive, incorporating several specially processed and wound inductors. These inductors, custom-made by the manufacturer, introduce magnetic saturation, resulting in a creamy, nonlinear, and organic sound.
Echorec
Pulsar Echorec is a software emulation of the iconic echo/delay unit of the same name produced by the Italian brand Binson in the 1960s.The sound of this magnetic disk delay unit has made significant contributions to the audio signatures of many bands from the 1970s, including Pink Floyd and Jimmy Page, and stands apart from the tape delays that were commonly used at the time.
The vintage Echorec is known for its characteristics such as saturation, self-oscillation, and over-sound, and has shaped the music of the 1970s. However, it has the drawback of being fragile and difficult to maintain.
Pulsar Echorec faithfully emulates this legendary echo unit. It also incorporates several workflow improvements, such as real-time changes to the motor speed (delay time) and the ability to sync to any tempo, including tap tempo.
Additionally, it precisely models three different conditions of the unit, allowing for a wide range of sounds, from the cleanest magnetic delay to the grittiest and most grungy sound.
