2. What Is SSL Native FlexVerb?

FlexVerb is a fully featured and extremely versatile algorithmic reverb plugin from SSL, designed to deliver professional, mix-ready reverb sounds quickly and intuitively. Its defining feature is a split early / late reflections architecture that treats the early reflections and the reverb tail as separate elements. You can combine the natural body and tone that the early reflections of different rooms provide with a rich, expansive reverb tail to build a single custom reverb.

On top of that, it packs a 6-band EQ, high-pass / low-pass filters, a 3-band reverb time multiplier and an input compressor side-chained from the dry signal, so you can shape a reverb that sits perfectly in your mix. The algorithmic architecture delivers the depth, character and detail of a professional reverb through a simple, easy-to-handle interface.

Key Features

  • Four algorithmic reverbs: Room / Hall / Plate / Chamber, each in three sizes (Small / Medium / Large)
  • Early reflections and reverb tail types and sizes can be selected independently (e.g. small room early reflections plus a large plate tail)
  • 6-band SSL EQ and a 3-band reverb time multiplier
  • Output compressor applied only to the reverb signal, side-chained from the dry input signal
  • Lockable Dry/Wet mix control that can be fixed while switching presets
  • Infinite reverb time switch and reverb tail kill switch
  • Graphical display of the EQ and reverb time multiplier with an FFT analyzer featuring afterglow

Choosing Early Reflections and Reverb Tail

There are four reverb types – Room, Hall, Plate and Chamber – each available in Small, Medium and Large sizes. The early reflections and the reverb tail each get their own drop-down menu for selecting type and size.

LINK switch: With LINK enabled, the type and size chosen for the early reflections are applied to the reverb tail as well. Turn LINK off and you can set the reverb tail type and size completely independently, creating combinations such as the spatial response of a small room paired with a long, lush plate tail.

INFINITE / KILL switches: The INFINITE switch sets the reverb time to infinity, while the KILL switch cuts the reverb tail. Both are there for creating dramatic effects.

Reverb Tail Controls

The reverb tail is adjusted with faders: Pre-Delay, Diffusion, Size, Reverb Time and Modulation. Together they cover a wide range of reverb sounds, and combined with the 3-band reverb time multiplier described below you can craft a reverb that is entirely your own.

3-Band Reverb Time Multiplier

The reverb tail is split into three frequency bands with adjustable crossover points. Reverb time can be adjusted independently for each band, with the multiplier increasing or decreasing the reverb time set in the reverb tail section on a per-band basis. It is a very handy way to shape the tone of the reverb, and it sounds far more natural than simply cutting with EQ.

6-Band EQ

A 6-band EQ can be applied to the reverb tail to dial in the overall tone. It consists of two parametric bands, a high shelf and a low shelf, plus a high-pass filter and a low-pass filter.

The EQ affects the reverb signal only and has no impact on the incoming source signal.

Input Side-Chain Compressor

A compressor is applied to the reverb output. You choose from nine presets with fixed attack, release and ratio values and simply adjust the threshold – keeping things nice and simple. The compressor side-chain is fed by the dry input signal.

Example use case: fitting a huge vocal reverb into a busy mix. While the vocal is sounding, the level of its reverb is automatically pushed down. When the vocal stops, the reverb level comes back up – so you get the impression of a much larger reverb without masking the clarity of the vocal.

Graphical Display

The display shows the following three things.

  • The composite curve of the EQ section – adjusted by dragging the circular nodes
  • The crossover points and values of the reverb time multiplier – adjusted by dragging the square nodes
  • An FFT analyzer with afterglow

The EQ can be controlled via the draggable nodes, the knobs or numeric entry. The FFT can be switched off by right-clicking (Ctrl-clicking) the display and choosing “off”.

Dry/Wet Mix and Lock Function

The Dry/Wet control lets you insert the reverb directly on a channel rather than using it via an AUX send.

When the lock function is enabled, the mix control parameter is excluded from the preset management system. Set the dry/wet balance where you want it and you can audition and compare a whole range of reverb presets without the mix changing on you.

Conclusion

That was a rundown of the latest sale information for SSL Native FlexVerb.

With its split early reflections and reverb tail architecture, built-in SSL EQ and dry-signal side-chain compressor, FlexVerb is a genuinely flexible reverb that can cover everything from natural room ambience to dramatic special effects – and at the current sale price it is very hard to beat.
