Techivation, one of the most talked-about plugin developers right now, has its automatic level control plugin M-Leveller on sale.

This article covers the current M-Leveller deal, what the plugin does and how to use it.

1. What Is Techivation M-Leveller?

M-Leveller is an automatic level control plugin developed by Techivation. It detects fine level changes in your audio in real time and automatically adjusts them to an optimal volume, keeping your mix balanced. Normally, holding audio at a consistent level means drawing automation by hand or dialling in a compressor very carefully. M-Leveller does that work automatically while preserving the dynamics and expression of the performance, so the balance stays natural.

Because it adjusts gain before the sound actually hits, it does not crush transients the way a compressor does, giving you a cleaner result. It evens out inconsistencies in vocals and instruments so the whole mix reads more smoothly. Used as pre-processing before a compressor, it feeds a more stable input signal, letting the compressor focus on what it is really for – shaping tone and texture.

What Is New in This Update

This free update adds the much-requested Noise Limit feature. It lets you suppress breaths, mic bleed and unwanted low-level noise while everything else is levelled consistently to the level you set with Target. The existing Noise Floor control only excluded quiet material from levelling; Noise Limit actively suppresses those low-level components instead.

On material where the noise you want to tame and the signal you want to level sit on the same track – vocals and voiceover, typically – you can now handle it all inside M-Leveller alone, without stacking a gate and a de-esser on top.

Existing M-Leveller users can get this update free from techivation.com/app.

Protector

Protector is a lightweight safety limiter designed to stop sudden level spikes. It transparently attenuates any audio that exceeds the limit you set, without introducing distortion. Protector is based on M-Leveller Cut Only mode but achieves a similar result with lower latency and lower CPU load, making it ideal for live use.

Main Controls and How to Use Them

  • Target: The main control, setting the peak level (dBFS) after levelling. Decide your target loudness and the plugin automatically holds a consistent level.
  • Noise Floor: Excludes anything quieter than the set value from levelling. Stops background noise, breaths and unwanted bleed from being pushed up into the mix. Easiest to dial in while watching the waveform display.
  • Noise Limit: New in this update. Suppresses breaths, mic bleed and unwanted low-level noise. Where Noise Floor only excludes that material from levelling, Noise Limit actively clamps down on those quiet components, so noise stays down while the main signal is still levelled to Target.
  • Display Range: Sets the level range shown in the waveform display. The maximum is fixed at +3 dBFS, and the minimum can be set to -48, -36, -24 or -16 dBFS.
  • Waveform/diff Display: Shows a visual history of the input and output levels over the last two seconds. Blue is input level, gold is output level, so you can see the effect of the processing in real time.
  • Speed: Sets how fast M-Leveller reacts. Higher values adjust level on individual notes and percussive hits; lower values adjust level phrase by phrase.
  • Mix: Controls how much of the processed level adjustment is applied. Lower values retain more of the original level movement, higher values give the fully processed sound.
  • Perceptual Filter Shape: Applies level correction based on how humans actually perceive different frequencies – highs read as louder, lows as quieter – for more natural levelling.
  • Peak / Filtered: Sets the strength of the filter correction. Low values adjust purely on peak level, high values apply correction based on human hearing.
  • Filter: A button to monitor only the filter output. Handy when fine-tuning your settings.
  • Match Sidechain: Automatically adjusts level to match an external audio signal. Uses your DAW sidechain input, useful for balancing against other tracks.
  • Mix Assist: Analyses 3.5 seconds of audio and sets optimal parameters automatically. Best used while playing back the densest part of the material.
  • Output: Adjusts the final clean gain (pure level up or down). Use it to fine-tune overall output level.
  • Gain Adjustment Mode: Lets you choose whether M-Leveller boosts, cuts, or does both.
