2. What Is W. A. Production “InstaComposer 4”?

A composing partner that generates MIDI in one click, from melodies, chords and drums to entire songs

W. A. Production’s InstaComposer 4 is a MIDI generator plugin that automatically generates MIDI based on rules and algorithms, covering chord progressions, melodies, riffs, basslines and drum patterns, all the way up to the structure of a complete song. As the fourth generation since the original release in 2021, it is a major update in which the core MIDI generation engine has been completely rebuilt as “MIDI Engine 2.0”. It adds two new generation modes (Arpeggiator and Rhythm V2), Foliage for adding ornamental notes to a melody, Groove controls for shaping the feel, and even a built-in instrument and mixer. You can regenerate results as many times as you like with a single button, and each result is unique. Generation is not trained on copyrighted songs or artists’ material; every result is built from scratch from the rules of music and algorithms, which keeps the risk of copyright infringement low and makes it easier to monetize and release the songs you make.

Key Features

• Generate a whole song in one click: Build the song structure (intro, verse, chorus, bridge, outro and so on), chord progression and the notes of every track with a single button. A “Chords & Notes” mode regenerates only chords and notes while keeping the structure, and a “Notes” mode regenerates only the notes.
• 6 tracks x 8 scenes: Each section has up to 6 independent tracks and 8 scenes, useful for exploring variations and arrangements. MIDI channels can be separated per track on output.

• MIDI import, editor and export: Import your own MIDI to mix with generated material, edit directly in the built-in MIDI editor, and drag and drop individual tracks or the entire song into your DAW.
• Flexible time signatures: You specify the number of beats per bar and notes per beat, so a wide range of time signatures such as 3/4, 6/8, 9/8 and 12/8 are supported.

In InstaComposer 4, you can fine-tune the character of the generated MIDI with the following parameter groups.

• Groove: Population (note density), Sustain (note length), Straight (emphasizes on-the-beat timing), Syncopation, Gallop (a driving feel from short-long combinations), Burst (clusters of notes) and Congestion (fills empty space with notes)
• Structure: Bar Structure (strength of pattern repetition within a bar) and Bar Combination (strength of pattern repetition across multiple bars)
• Pitch: Scale-Chord (probability of choosing chord tones versus scale notes) and Chromatic (probability of mixing in notes outside the scale)
• Harmony: How often harmony is added, the number of voices, their variation, and how closely they follow the motif
• Pattern: The probability of adding patterns and motifs, their length, how often they reappear, and how much they change over time
• Velocity / Time: Humanization of velocity and timing (amount and range of variation, synchronization between harmonies)
• Foliage: Growth (density of ornamental notes), Direction (pitch movement), Root Oct (center octave) and Velocity
• Strum: The probability, speed and frequency of adding a strumming effect to chords and harmonies

Play Sound Right Away with the Built-In Instrument and Mixer

Starting with version 4, InstaComposer is an instrument plugin with a built-in sound source. It includes an acoustic piano and General MIDI-style sounds, so you can play back and audition generated songs on the spot without routing the MIDI to an external instrument. You can also load your own SoundFont (.sf2) files to swap in the sounds you like. The mixer lets you adjust the volume balance of each track, the master output, and the reverb and delay send amounts. You can still route the MIDI output to an external instrument as before, and the manual includes setup examples for DAWs such as FL Studio, Cubase, Ableton Live, Pro Tools and Reaper. Note that in Logic Pro it can no longer be used as a MIDI effect and is instead loaded as an audio instrument (dragging and dropping generated MIDI onto other tracks is still possible).
