Umami Audio’s multi-function clipper plugin Grandma’s Spice is available as a free download! In this article, we’ll introduce the giveaway details and an overview of Grandma’s Spice.
1. What Is Umami Audio’s Grandma’s Spice?
Grandma’s Spice is a clipper / tone-shaper plugin that lets you freely blend four types of analog-style saturation via an XY pad, and it also includes three 8-band EQs. The four corners of the XY pad are assigned Linear, JFET, Op-Amp, and Transformer characters, and dragging a single node lets you continuously morph between all four. Each corner’s blend ratio is displayed in real time as a percentage, and built-in loudness compensation keeps levels consistent so you can focus purely on comparing tonal character rather than volume differences.
The EQ section consists of three independent units — Input, Delta, and Output — each functioning as an 8-band parametric EQ. This lets you shape tone in three separate places: the frequency balance going into the saturation stage, the processed signal alone (Delta), and the final output stage.
For clipping, the plugin uses a foldback approach that folds signals exceeding the threshold back within range, and the amount of folded-back signal can be adjusted with the Delta knob. Turning Delta all the way down gives a standard hard clip, while boosting it thickens the harmonics — turning the clipping behavior itself into a character control.
Key Features
- A saturation section with Linear, JFET, Op-Amp, and Transformer characters placed at the four corners of the XY pad, freely blendable by dragging a single node
- Three independent 8-band parametric EQs: Input, Delta, and Output
- Foldback-algorithm clipping that folds signals exceeding the threshold back within range as many times as needed
- A Delta knob to adjust the amount of folded-back signal from −60 to +36 dB
- Three fold modes switchable via the Fold Mode button
- A brickwall clipper on the final stage that limits output to full scale
- Analysis tools including input/output VU meters, a spectrum analyzer that overlays the dry and processed signal, and an oscilloscope
- Support for up to 8x oversampling
