2. What Is Native Instruments “Massive XL”?

A next-generation Massive that keeps the depth of Massive X while getting you to your own sound faster

Native Instruments “Massive XL” builds on the sound and free routing structure of Massive X. It stays compatible with Massive X presets and Expansions, and adds audio-to-preset generation, a Mutator, and visualized modulation. It is a next-generation flagship synthesizer. The original Massive shaped bass music, electro and dubstep, and Massive XL carries on that lineage, covering everything from fat, aggressive bass to sharp leads, sparkling highs and thick pads. It ships with 1000 factory presets. The new features offer an entry point for making your own sounds even without synthesis knowledge, without oversimplifying the controls, so you can still go deep into sound design.

Main features

• 10 oscillator modes and hundreds of wavetables: 10 oscillator modes change how wavetables behave. Choose from tables including the original Massive, vintage PPG, acoustic and analog-derived material. Over 100 new wavetables and over 100 noise tables have been added.
• Load your own wavetables: drag and drop your own samples or sample folders to create custom wavetables.
• Flexible signal path: route oscillators, noise, filters, inserts, phase modulation and feedback in any combination.
• Built-in effects: shape, widen and finish your sound inside the synth. NI’s Raum, Replika Shimmer and Tape Wobble are new additions.
• Versatile filters: a range of filters for everything from tone shaping to experimental processing.
• Drag-and-drop modulation: assign modulation, sidechain, envelopes, LFOs and macros by drag and drop. Draw rhythmic movement with the Performer, and use the Tracker to vary sounds by note and velocity. Favorite Performer curves can be saved.
• Morpher and Animator: shaping tools that turn expressive movement into something playable and work across presets.
• Polyphonic aftertouch support: add per-note expression with compatible hardware such as the Kontrol S-series. Compatible presets are included.

Preset Generator, Mutator and Randomizer: build your starting point instantly

Massive XL adds features that let you reach your own sound from your own material or existing presets, without starting from scratch.

• Preset Generator: analyzes a loaded audio file and generates four synth presets with every parameter editable. The Match/Imagine slider sets how far the result departs from the source: toward “Match” it stays as close as possible to the original sound, and the closer to “Imagine” the further it moves away. If you are not satisfied, press Generate again to regenerate, or send the result to the Mutator to create more variations. It includes stem separation, and no synthesis knowledge is required.
• Mutator: based on other presets in your library, it swaps the building blocks of the sound itself, such as filter, oscillator and effect types.
• Randomizer: keeps the building blocks as they are and changes only the settings of each module.
• Lock function: with both the Mutator and Randomizer, you can lock the parts you want to keep or change them one at a time.

A clear interface and tools to organize your sounds

• Animated modulator display: each assigned modulator moves in real time as a shape, and shows how much it affects each control.
• Drag-editable envelopes: edit envelope curves directly by dragging handles or segments.
• Modulator information display: hover over a patch to see the assigned modulators, and hover over a parameter to see what is moving it.
• Undo/Redo history: every edit is recorded, so you can jump back to any point at once instead of one step at a time.
• Help display: explanations appear on the spot where you hover, so you can check how to use the synth without closing it.
• User Banks: organize presets into banks by project, genre, client and so on.
• Templates and sub-presets: use factory presets as a starting point, and save filter, effect, Performer and Keytracker settings to reuse in your next sound. Preset search with search, favorites and tags is also supported.

Building on the sound and free routing of Massive X, Massive XL brings the following changes.

Massive X owners can move to Massive XL with the Update version, and original Massive owners with the Crossgrade version, both cheaper than the full version.
