FSVR, a software synth that recreates the Yamaha FS1R, is currently available for free. This article covers how to get it and what it offers.
1. What Is musica.studio FSVR?
FSVR (Formant Synthesizer Virtual Rack) recreates the Yamaha FS1R, released in 1998, by rewriting the hardware firmware logic in C++. It offers 4 parts and 32 channels, filters, two LFOs, effects, factory banks, and formant sequence (Fseq) playback, and the FS1R front panel itself serves as the interface. It is free and open source (GPLv3), and works as both a plugin and a standalone app.
Key Features
- All 88 hardware algorithms included, with support for the FS1R’s distinctive voiced and unvoiced operators
- Built-in factory banks: 1,408 voices, 384 performances and 90 formant sequences (no need to prepare your own dumps)
- Formant sequence (Fseq) playback with all loop modes, start delay and MIDI clock sync
- The front panel is the GUI, reproduced from the screen tables inside the firmware
- Windows / macOS / Linux support in VST3, CLAP, VST2, AU and standalone formats
2. How to Download and Install FSVR
