What Is Orra Audio “Orra Deverb”?
Orra Deverb is a de-reverb plugin that reduces the room sound in already recorded tracks — both the reverb tail that lingers after notes and words, and the ambience laid underneath it. It needs no reference signal and works from a single track alone, mono or stereo. Press the Scout button and it measures the room response from the material itself and sets every control automatically, so all that is left for you to do is balance it by ear.
At the core of the processing sits a room model described by two numbers: Room Decay (the time it takes for the reverb to fall by 60 dB) and Reverb Level (the level of the reverb relative to the direct sound). Audio is analysed in 43 ms frames with 75% overlap, and for every frequency the plugin decides whether the level is falling along the decay curve the model predicts, whether a short-term predictor can explain it from the sound immediately before it, and — on stereo tracks — whether left and right agree, in order to separate room sound from source. It takes advantage of the fact that a centred vocal produces the same signal on both sides while stereo reverb does not.
The direct sound keeps its original phase and stereo image, and only its level changes over time. Phase is never processed at all, and the first 40 ms after a sound starts — the range where early reflections live — is left untouched, so the texture of the direct sound is preserved.
