2. What Is IK Multimedia “T-RackS Sunset Sound Studio Reverb”?
T-RackS Sunset Sound Studio Reverb is a convolution reverb that recreates the sound of the live rooms, echo chambers and isolation booths of Sunset Sound studio in Los Angeles. Built as a module for IK Multimedia’s T-RackS series, it is the original version (v1) of Sunset Sound Studio Reverb.
Sunset Sound was founded in 1958 by Tutti Camarata, who was a recording director at Disney Studios. Records by The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Prince and many others have been recorded there. This plug-in lets you switch between the live room, isolation booth and echo chamber of each of the three studios, plus two plate reverbs actually used at the studio (EMT 140 and Echoplate) and a spring reverb (AKG BX-20E), all in a single plug-in.
The impulse responses were captured with the microphones that are regularly used in each room. Working with Sunset Sound’s engineers, IK studied the session sheets of classic records to determine even the microphone placement. By combining IK’s proprietary VRM™ (Volumetric Response Modeling) technology with modeling of the signal path of the studio’s custom console and preamps, it recreates not only the sound of the space but also the harmonic character of the mics, preamps and console.
Operation is simple, with pre-delay, decay, filters, EQ and mic settings. As a T-RackS 5 module, it can be used as a standalone plug-in, combined with other processors inside the T-RackS 5 shell, or used as a mastering module in the standalone version.
Key Features
- Live rooms, isolation booths and echo chambers from three studios
- Vintage plate reverbs (EMT 140, Echoplate) and spring reverb (AKG BX-20E)
- Studio spaces recreated with IK’s proprietary VRM™ technology
- Recorded with each room’s regular mics, with the console and preamp signal path also modeled
- Pre-delay and decay time adjustment
- High-pass/low-pass filters and high/low shelving EQ
- Stereo width adjustment and mic settings
- Dry/wet mix (with dry-only/wet-only monitoring)
- Can be used as a module inside the T-RackS 5 shell
3. What Is IK Multimedia “T-RackS Sunset Sound Studio Reverb II”?
Sunset Sound Studio Reverb II is a studio reverb that recreates the sound of Sunset Sound Studios 1, 2 and 3, greatly expanded from v1. While v1 was a T-RackS module, v2 is an independent plug-in that works without T-RackS, so you can load it straight into your DAW.
Differences Between v1 and v2
| Item | v1 (T-RackS Sunset Sound Studio Reverb) | v2 (Sunset Sound Studio Reverb II) |
|---|---|---|
| Product format | T-RackS 5 module | Independent plug-in, no T-RackS required |
| Included reverbs | Live rooms/booths/chambers of 3 studios, 2 plates, spring | Same (3 live rooms, 3 booths, 3 chambers, EMT 140, Echoplate, AKG BX-20E) |
| Source position | Mic position adjustment | Up to 27 source positions per studio, each recorded individually (no interpolation) |
| Reverb engines | — | 2 engines usable in parallel (EQ, stereo and routing per engine) |
| Space size | Decay time adjustment | SIZE stretches the IR from 0–200% (preserving tone and spatial character) |
| Source modes | — | Directional / Omni |
| Absorption control | — | Variable acoustic damping in Studios 1 and 3 |
| Signal path | Modeled signal path of the studio console and preamps | Choice of API/DeMedio Sunset Sound Custom or Class-A Discrete NEVE 8880 |
The Room Sound Changes With the Source Position
The biggest difference is how source position is handled. In v2, up to 27 source positions in each studio were actually recorded one by one rather than calculated by interpolation. As a result, when you move the source, the early reflections, wall reflections and sense of distance change just as they would in the real room, giving you depth and dimension that conventional IR reverbs couldn’t achieve.
It also features modes that change how the room is excited depending on how the source radiates sound. Directional mode is for sources that project in a specific direction, such as vocals, guitar cabinets and brass, while Omni mode is for sources that radiate in all directions, such as drums, piano and ensembles.
Build Spaces by Combining Two Reverbs
v2 has two independent reverb engines that can run in parallel. You can freely combine live rooms, echo chambers, isolation booths, the EMT plate and the AKG spring, with individual EQ, stereo controls and routing for each engine. This lets you layer a real room with a hardware reverb or blend multiple rooms together.
Change the Room Size While Keeping Its Character
The SIZE control doesn’t simply lengthen or shorten the decay. It stretches the impulse response from 0% to 200% while preserving the tone and spatial character of the original recording. You can tighten a large room or expand a small space without breaking down the detail of the early reflections, or match the decay to the tempo and arrangement of your song.
Change Even the Acoustic Panels in Studios 1 and 3
Studios 1 and 3 feature variable acoustic damping that recreates the effect of Sunset Sound’s movable acoustic panels. Rather than applying EQ or decay processing afterwards, each absorption state of the room was recorded separately, so reflection density, decay behavior and tonal balance change just as they do in the real room. You can naturally tighten low-end muddiness or soften high-frequency reflections without losing clarity, tailoring the same room to the instrument and placement.
IR Count and Studio Signal Path
The live rooms alone include 336 stereo impulse responses, offering far more spatial variation than the previous version. In addition to Sunset Sound’s vintage microphones, the studio console signal path has also been modeled. Choosing between API/DeMedio Sunset Sound Custom and Class-A Discrete NEVE 8880 adds harmonic depth and Sunset Sound’s signature tone to the reverb. The interface has been redesigned in 3D, so you can adjust while visually checking the source position, damping state and routing.
