2. What Is Steven Slate Drums 5.5 (SSD 5.5)?
Steven Slate Drums (SSD) is the drum sampler from Steven Slate Audio, created by producer Steven Slate. For over 20 years its “industry-standard” drum sounds have been used on countless hit records. You can program them into your own tracks or use them to replace and reinforce live drums. The latest version is Steven Slate Drums 5.5 (SSD 5.5).
Three key points of SSD 5.5
| 1 | There is a version you can use for free, forever. A no-time-limit, full-feature SSD 5.5 demo is available, so you can try the sound and workflow for free first (details below). |
| 2 | 148+ kits x 2,400+ grooves cover every genre. Rock, metal, hip-hop, country, electronic, pop, 70s, and jazz — it works for any genre. |
| 3 | A “sits-in-the-mix” sound highly rated by pros. The sounds sit in the track without needing EQ or compression, and many producers behind hit-record mixes recommend it. |
Main Features
- Kit Browser (148+ kits): Filter and preview 148+ drum kits by genre, artist, and sound character to quickly find a kit that fits your song.
- MIDI Grooves (2,400+ grooves): 2,400+ MIDI grooves played by real drummers, covering all genres, usable via drag-and-drop into your DAW.
- Groove AI (AI-powered): Analyzes your song, detects key transients, and automatically suggests matching MIDI grooves. Fine-tune with the Morph knob and build your song in the Build lane, then send it straight to the arrange view.
- Customize Panel (detailed tweaking): Freely control articulation, tuning, velocity, individual mics, and ADSR to dial in the sound down to the finest detail.
- Mix Console (built-in mixer): A studio-quality mixing tool is built in, letting you adjust volume, pan, and effects for each drum part.
- Broad compatibility (DAW / e-drums): Works in all major DAWs and supports major electronic drum kits — usable for both programming and live performance.
