2. Relab Products on Sale and How They Differ
From here, we give an overview of Relab Development products. We will look at them in this order: the four reverb series (REV6000 / Q82 / LX480 / Sonsig Rev-A), dynamics and EQ (MLA-4 / MEA-2 / Relab 176), and spatial and saturation effects (Sonsig ACE / Color Drive).
How “Essentials” relates to the standard versions (applies to REV6000 / Q82 / LX480)
The Essentials versions are streamlined editions built on the same reverb algorithms as each series, with parameters cut down to the essentials so you can work quickly from presets. The sonic character is the same family as the standard versions; the difference is how deeply you can fine-tune the sound. As a rule of thumb, choose the standard version if you want to dial in every detail, and Essentials if you mainly want to work from presets quickly.
REV6000 Series
REV6000 is a cinematic reverb that recreates a Danish-made hardware reverb beloved in Hollywood film scoring. It is designed as an all-round realistic reverb that covers everything from tight, focused rooms to large, warm “Hollywood Halls” in a single plugin.
REV6000 Features
- Natural early reflections: The original hardware uses ray-tracing-based algorithms hand-tuned over many years, so instead of the metallic early reflections found in many reverb plugins, REV6000 reproduces natural, constantly evolving reflections.
- A reverb space that adapts to your settings: In a typical reverb, one parameter affects only one element, but REV6000 uses a “one-to-many” design where moving a parameter changes multiple linked elements, so it rarely sounds unnatural no matter how you adjust it.
- Room / Hall algorithms: Handles everything from subtly adding ambience to vocals to vast, film-score-style halls.
- Factory presets included: Start from a preset and adjust it to fit your mix.
Differences from REV6000 Essentials
REV6000 Essentials shares the same cinematic sonic character as REV6000, but is a simplified version with fewer parameters. It is designed for choosing a preset and then shaping the space with a few controls. Choose the standard REV6000 if you want to fine-tune in detail, and Essentials if you just want the sound right away.
QuantX (Q82) Series
Q82 is a dual-engine reverb that recreates a 1980s room simulator (natural resonance reverb), right down to the quirks of the hardware. Known for its realistic ambience and long reverb times, this legendary unit was once used in many top studios, and Q82 uses machine learning to capture its nuances.
Q82 Features
- Two algorithms + temperature control: Switch between a stable, factory-fresh German unit and a well-worn American unit with a strong character. The Temperature knob also recreates how the sound changes from a cold unit just after power-on to one that has been warmed up for 72 hours.
- Dual-engine design: Combines two reverb systems, each with four outputs, letting you adjust the reverb width and front-to-back depth in real time.
- Hand-tuned 8-voice modulation, early-reflection channel swap and extended band controls let you quickly create complex, textured reverbs.
Differences from Q82 Essentials
Q82 Essentials is a simplified version that gives you the same natural ambience and long reverb times of the 1980s room simulator with a reduced set of controls. It is designed for starting from a preset and touching only the parameters you need, and can still create everything from small spaces to large halls. If you want detailed control over the dual engine, temperature control and more, choose the standard Q82.
LX480 Series
The LX480 series is a digital reverb that recreates the legendary Lexicon 480L of the mid-1980s to early 1990s, sample by sample. It reproduces the reverb heard on countless hit records and films, modeled on a unit kept in perfect condition at New York’s renowned Hit Factory.
LX480 Dual-Engine Reverb V4 Features
- Two independent engines, just like the original: The only plugin version that recreates the hardware’s dual-engine routing. Use two algorithms at the same time and choose from four engine configurations.
- Algorithms derived from the 480L: Includes Random Hall, Hall, Room, Plate, Ambiance, Twin Delays and Panorama. It also covers non-reverb functions, such as Twin Delays for doubling and ping-pong delays, and Panorama for widening stereo sources.
- High-definition mode: Random Hall HD and a 32-bit float mode let you take advantage of modern CPU power for high-resolution reverb.
- Chorus engine: A feature not found on the hardware that creates wobbling reverb tails like the vintage digital reverbs of the 70s and early 80s.
- Shape and Spread: Recreates the signature 480L parameters that define the reverb’s build-up and sustain.
- Early reflection engine: Generates thousands of reflections as random clusters to create dense reverb with minimal artifacts and phase interference.
- Output render modes and filters: Switch between digital and analog-modeled outputs to change the tone, and graphically control the EQ, high-pass and low-pass filters.
- Two interface modes: Switch between “Hardware Mode,” styled after the original remote, and “Advanced Mode,” which shows more parameters. Includes hundreds of presets.
Differences from LX480 Essentials
LX480 Essentials is a simplified version that includes only four of the most-used reverbs from the LX480 family with a simple set of controls.
- Fat Plate: A bright, rich plate for vocals and percussion
- Medium Hall: A smooth, even hall that blends instruments into the same space
- Small Ambience: Subtle distance for dry tracks and short drum rooms
- Large Wood Room: A colored room that adds a sense of space to music and video mixes
The dual engines, HD mode, chorus, Twin Delays / Panorama and more are only available in the standard Dual-Engine Reverb V4.
MASELEC MLA-4
MASELEC MLA-4, developed together with Maselec, is a dynamics plugin for mixing and mastering that performs 3-band compression and expansion. It brings a well-regarded analog mastering unit into plugin form, letting you process each band independently and control dynamics without upsetting the tonal balance.
MLA-4 Features
- Compression and expansion on each band at the same time: Use compression (up to 6:1) and expansion (up to 1:2) independently and in combination on each band. Tame low-end boominess while lifting the air in the highs, or bring back transients in an over-processed mix.
- Per-band threshold, ratio, attack and release: Create tight lows, defined mids and smooth highs without pumping or dullness.
- 5-mode sidechain linking: In addition to fully linked and fully independent modes, there are intermediate modes where the low band influences compression in the mid and high bands.
- Auto Spectral Balance: Automatically applies gain compensation to the low, mid and high bands so the tonal balance holds up even under heavy processing. Combined with Auto Level, you can choose to preserve the tone or deliberately change it.
- Per-band THD control: Add harmonic coloration only to the band you choose, such as “lows only” or “mids only.”
- Band solo and L/R cut: Monitoring features not found on the hardware that let you hear what each band is doing and how each channel contributes as you adjust.
MASELEC MEA-2
MASELEC MEA-2 is a mastering-grade stereo EQ plugin developed together with Leif Mases, the designer of the original hardware. Leif Mases himself has said that the difference between this plugin and the hardware is smaller than the difference between two individual hardware units.
MEA-2 Features
- Hand-tuned EQ curves: Rather than textbook formulas, the asymmetrical Unique Q (bandwidth) curves are tuned musically.
- Wide-band shelving: Shelves that cover a broad frequency range let you create highs that never get harsh and lows that never get muddy.
- Mid/Side mode on every band: A feature not found on the hardware that lets you set M/S processing individually for each band.
- Solo Isolation: A solo function with a fixed gain curve to track down problem frequencies and resonances. Because the EQ bands are connected in series, you can also immediately hear how the bands interact.
- Modern workflow: Per-band stereo linking, balance control, preset management and a resizable GUI.
Relab 176
Relab 176 is a compressor that recreates a vintage 1960s 176-style tube compressor by analyzing the entire circuit in real time. Because it computes the interaction of the tubes, transformers, timing circuit and power supply, it faithfully reproduces the tone, timing and dynamic behavior of the hardware.
Relab 176 Features
- Fixed-threshold, variable-gain design: Musical compression where the ratio, drive and input material interact to shape the timing, curve and harmonics.
- Four ratios (2:1 / 4:1 / 8:1 / 12:1): Each ratio has its own knee and slope, covering everything from smooth leveling to heavy limiting.
- Program-dependent attack/release: The resistor and capacitor network works in tandem with the tube stage, so the timing changes with the input signal. A Fixed/Auto switch changes the release behavior.
- Polarity-selectable sidechain: Choose whether the compressor reacts to the positive side, the negative side or both sides of the waveform, useful for controlling kick attack or vocal plosives.
- Two circuit paths: Switch between Transformer (fast attack with added character) and Resistor (slow attack, flat tone and a vintage-style low-end push).
- Calibration: Moves the tube bias and balance together to change the feel of the threshold, harmonics and dynamics.
- Back-panel trims: Click the Relab logo to reveal three trims (6BC8 bias, 6BC8 anode balance and 12AX7 bias) plus Reference Level for fine control of gain staging and harmonic balance.
Sonsig Rev-A
Sonsig Rev-A is an easy-to-use reverb that combines a traditional true-stereo algorithmic reverb with modern filters and ensemble modulation. It covers a wide range, from 80s hardware-style sounds to realistic modern spaces.
Sonsig Rev-A Features
- 10 reverb sizes: Each with adjustable decay time, letting you create anything from vintage warmth to pure, clear modern spaces.
- Intuitive, menu-free controls: Adjust quickly with tempo-syncable PreDelay, Size, Decay, Width and Diffusion.
- Three output render modes: Choose from lo-fi vintage QRS, the distinctive texture of 224, or the clear, modern Rev-A to instantly change the character of the entire reverb.
- Built-in ensemble chorus: The world’s first “in-reverb” ensemble running three modulation algorithms at once, giving elegant reverb tails even with long decays.
- Freeze function: Infinite sustain for drones and abstract spatial effects.
- Includes over 200 presets.
Sonsig ACE
Sonsig ACE is a dimension expander (a modulation effect that adds stereo width and depth) with a multi-voice, dual-engine design. From subtle stereo thickening to deep, swirling modulation, you can shape it all with four controls: Voices, Rate, Color and Enrich.
Sonsig ACE Features
- Six custom-waveform LFOs: Hand-tuned modulation adds movement, width and depth. Use Rate to go from subtle enhancement to obvious modulation.
- Color modes: Modes such as Natural, Thick and Fat change the texture of the modulation across frequency bands.
- Enrich: Adds depth and width while preserving the character of the original sound.
- Natural stereo spread: Reduces center congestion and spreads sounds across the entire stereo field.
- No comb-filtering artifacts: Adds thickness without the destructive artifacts of conventional techniques.
- Mono compatibility: Keeps your mix intact even in mono playback.
Color Drive
Color Drive is a circuit-modeled tube saturator that takes the tube stage of the Relab 176 as-is. Rather than approximating “warmth” by stacking algorithms, it computes the input transformer, 6BC8 variable-gain tube, calibration bias and output transformer as a single circuit, so it behaves like hardware: changing one thing changes how the whole system responds.
Color Drive Features
- Drive: Pushes the 6BC8 tube stage for anything from gentle warmth to rich saturation. Harmonics build naturally while transients are rounded off in a controlled way.
- Transformer switch: Puts the output transformer in the signal path to add focus and punch. With Calibration centered, mainly odd-order harmonics are generated.
- Calibration (tube bias adjustment): Move the bias to add even-order harmonics for warmth and definition. Combine it with the transformer to fine-tune how the color is applied.
- Low-frequency crossover: Lets deep lows bypass the drive circuit to keep them clean.
- Pre/post tilt and high-shelf filters: Decide in advance which frequency range is pushed into the tube stage.
- Future expansion: At launch it features the Relab 176 tube stage, but it is designed to support “Color Pack” upgrades that add new hardware models.
